GM Pauses Next-Gen Electric Truck Development

General Motors has reportedly suspended development of its next-generation full-size electric trucks, marking a significant shift in the company's electric vehicle strategy.

According to industry reports, GM had been working on updated and more affordable successors to its current electric lineup, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and GMC Hummer EV. These new models were initially planned for a 2028 release.

However, suppliers have been informed that the program has been indefinitely halted, with no new timeline provided. Industry analysts now predict that fresh full-size GM electric trucks may not arrive until 2030, and potentially even later.

This decision doesn't mean GM's current electric trucks are being discontinued. The existing models will continue production at Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck. The Cadillac Escalade IQ is expected to remain in production due to its importance to Cadillac's brand strategy.

Instead, GM appears to be redirecting resources toward products with stronger current market demand. The company is focusing on its upcoming T1-2 internal-combustion truck platform, which will power future full-size pickups and SUVs. The Orion Assembly plant, previously earmarked for electric trucks, is now preparing for gas-powered models.

The automaker is also exploring alternative technologies, including plug-in hybrid versions of the Silverado and Sierra, as well as range-extended electric vehicles. These options align with strategies being pursued by competitors like Ram and Ford.

This strategic pivot comes amid changing market conditions, including reduced EV tax credits, relaxed emissions regulations, and slower-than-expected demand for expensive electric pickups. While GM maintains that electric vehicles remain part of its long-term vision, the company is clearly prioritizing its most profitable products in the near term.
