GM replaces CVT in Equinox with new 8-speed automatic

General Motors is making a significant change to its popular Equinox crossover, replacing the continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a new eight-speed automatic. This move affects all versions of the 2027 Chevy Equinox, whether front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, marking a clear departure from the current setup where FWD models rely solely on a CVT.

The decision comes alongside GM's $40 million investment in its Toledo Propulsion Systems plant to produce a new front-wheel-drive variant of the eight-speed automatic transmission. This transmission will not only be used in the Equinox but also in the closely related GMC Terrain and several other GMC models, though specific models have not yet been announced.

GM has not publicly explained the reasoning behind this change, but the eight-speed automatic could potentially improve fuel economy for the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. The new transmission might also increase towing capacity for front-wheel-drive models, which currently max out at 800 pounds compared to 1,500 pounds for AWD versions.

Beyond the transmission update, the 2027 Equinox is expected to remain largely unchanged. However, some cosmetic updates may include replacing the Cacti Green exterior color with Autumn Harvest Metallic and changing the RS model's interior stitching from Santorini Blue to Torch Red. Pricing and availability details have not yet been released, but an official reveal should come in the coming weeks or months.
